  • THE VERMONT YEARS: 1998 – 2004
As the former President & Chief Executive Officer of the American Lung Association of Vermont, Inc., Uerz guided that organization for over six and a half years. His major accomplishments included the establishment of the American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Center at the University of Vermont with a successful $1.2 million capital campaign, a major expansion of community-based program initiatives across Vermont and the successful passage of significant public policy initiatives at both the state and local levels.

Operationally, Uerz lead the transformation of the Association into a more mission-focused and market-driven organization dedicated to meeting the needs of its customer; diversified the Association’s income sources as well as dramatically increased the budget size; implemented progressive not-for-profit business practices and strategies; and worked with the Board of Directors to complete a comprehensive review and update of the Association’s Bylaws and the Association’s Personnel Policies, including the development of outcome-oriented job descriptions and Conflict of Interest Policies for both Board Members and Staff.

  • THE CONNECTICUT YEARS: 1980 – 1997
Uerz was a valued member of the management team at the American Lung Association of Connecticut, Inc. as its Associate Executive Director for the last twelve of the seventeen years he served at that Association. In this position, he developed and implemented a highly effective market-driven program development process that increased customer satisfaction, increased program funding, and increased the output of both the program and fundraising staff. He effectively reorganized the Association’s Research Program. He expanded the operation of The Connecticut Thoracic Society, the Association’s Medical Section, setting the stage for its receipt of an inaugural national recognition award in 2002.

Lecturing and Teaching at the University of Connecticut
During the late 1980s through the late 1990s, Uerz lectured in the Master of Public Health Program at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and in 1996 taught a full semester seminar titled, “Effectively Managing Voluntary Health Agencies.” He was scheduled to teach an updated version of his management seminar in the Spring 1998 semester but declined in order to assume the executive position in Vermont.

  • THE NEW YORK YEARS: 1978 – 1980
Uerz began his not-for-profit career in 1978 with the American Lung Association of Western New York, Inc. after successful internships with the American Lung Association of New York State, Inc. and the American Heart Association. In May 1980, he presented a lecture on effective project management at the American Lung Association/Canadian Lung Association Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

A Career of Board Service to His Profession and His Community
Uerz has served on numerous not-for-profit governing boards, most notably the New England Public Health Association where he served as its president as well as The Burlington Rotary Club’s Board of Directors, the State University of New York at Plattsburgh’s Alumni Association Board of Directors, and presently on the Board of the Vermont Consultants Network.

An Educational Background in Organization & Management
Uerz holds a Master of Education degree in Administration & Supervision from Antioch University’s New England Graduate School and a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

In the summer of 2003, he served as team leader at a week-long intensive study program for not-for-profit executives at the Harvard Business School titled, “Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management.”

In June 2009, he completed a Professional Certificate in Leadership & Management at the University of Vermont School of Business Administration.
